Much has been made about the League Cup over the years with a number of clubs from all divisions deciding to utilise their squads and give players who are on the fringes game time, but should David Moyes be making wholesale changes for Sunderland’s upcoming clash?
It has been a troubled start to the new season for Sunderland with no wins in the Premier League, but the EFL Cup could be the platform where the Black Cats can kickstart their season.
With no wins since their last EFL Cup outing a 1-0 victory at home to Shrewsbury Town it has been a difficult period for Moyes as he looks to rebuild at the Stadium of Light.
Victories breed confidence and a positive result in the EFL Cup could be what is needed to get some points on the board for Sunderland in the Premier League as they sit in 19th with just one point from five games.
Naturally you would expect the vast majority of Premier League clubs to rotate their squads but Moyes must take advantage of the opportunity to build some momentum and play his strongest side available.
Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur showed brief glimpses of what they are capable of, such as Adnan Januzaj getting in behind to set up Steven Pienaar, although Moyes will need to find a way of making the most of his better players as they struggled to sustain pressure or territory.
The squad are in need of a win to instill some kind of belief that they can push on and making a number of changes will not help Moyes’ cause; so should he stick with a large majority of his most recent starting XI?
