The Baggies striker, on loan from Newcastle, played a part in his side’s controversial 2-2 Championship draw with Nottingham Forest.
On Tuesday night, West Bromwich Albion claimed a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest in controversial circumstances as Dwight Gayle won a late penalty which Jay Rodriguez converted for the Baggies for a share of the Championship points.
The on-loan Newcastle United man went down in the box just one minute from time, seemingly under a challenge from Alexander Milosevic, but replays showed there was little to no contact, though the referee still awarded it.
It had been an eventful game even prior to the incident as Stefan Johansen netted an own goal to give Forest the lead just six minutes into his home debut before Jacob Murphy poked home his first Albion goal after the break.
Ryan Yates restored the lead for Martin O’Neill’s side with a volley that came off the woodwork en route to goal, but with the hosts seemingly on the way to defeat came the flashpoint involving Gayle, who is currently under intense criticism on social media, as can be seen on this WBA Twitter update.
With the race for promotion to the Premier League so hotly contested, every point counts, and with 31 games played, West Brom remain just four points behind Leeds United, with the two teams facing off at Elland Road on Friday 1 March.
In addition, the Baggies got off to a poor start in February, losing 3-2 to Middlesbrough in the league and 3-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup, but victory over Stoke City followed by the draw against Forest could provide a psychological boost ahead of four major fixtures – Aston Villa away, QPR away, Sheffield United at home and Leeds away.
Should Albion now kick on and edge into the top two come the 46th game at the expense of either Norwich City or Leeds, there is bound to be a lot more anger over the incident that took place late on 12 February 2019.
