Gayle wary of West Brom set-piece threat ahead of Newcastle clash

Dwight Gayle is likely to feature for Newcastle United as they face West Brom on Tuesday night.

Dwight Gayle has told Newcastle United’s official website that he would be more than willing to take a point against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night as the two sides do battle at the Hawthorns.

Newcastle travel down south with the task of stopping a run of four successive defeats that has seen Rafa Benitez’s side lose to Bournemouth, Burnley, Manchester United and Watford.

Now in a lowly 14th place in the Premier League table, Benitez will be desperate for his side to take advantage of the fact that West Brom are yet to replace the sacking of Tony Pulis and end their run of league defeats.

Gayle, who has scored Newcastle’s only goal in their last four matches during the 4-1 defeat to United, told NUFC-TV that he would take a draw against West Brom, and is wary of the Baggies’ aerial prowess.

“We need to go back to the drawing board,” Gayle said. “We’re lacking a bit of commitment – we need to be tighter and more compact, not as open as last week.

“We know West Brom have vast experience, they’ll be very tactically aware and will be a threat from set-pieces. They have some strong attackers, so we must concentrate and not take things for granted.

“It’s not nice to be on a run of defeats, even if we get a point away from home, it’s better than losing. We need points on the board.”

Gayle, 27, has been in and out of the side this season following the summer signing of Spanish striker Joselu from Stoke City, but has started the Toon’s last three matches and is expected to do the same.

Three points for Newcastle could seem them climb into the top half of the Premier League table, but would have to rely on a whole host of teams dropping points including Brighton, Southampton, Huddersfield Leicester and Bournemouth.
