Gayle insists Newcastle’s quality is behind his goal-scoring form

The striker has managed nine goals for Newcastle United in the Championship this season.

Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has told the club’s official website that his goal-scoring form is down to the quality around him in the team.

The Magpies striker was in fine form once again over the weekend as he bagged two goals in the 3-1 win over Brentford.

His double took him to nine goals in the Championship so far this season, making him the division’s highest goal-scorer.

It is an impressive tally for the former Crystal Palace man, who is proving to be a smart capture for Rafa Benitez.

Gayle, though, is not keen to take the plaudits and says his exploits are down to the quality around him in the team.

“I’ve got to thank some of the players in the dressing room – the quality in the team is fantastic throughout the whole team,” he told the club’s official website.

“Everyone’s chipping in with the assists for me. As you’ve seen [against Brentford], I had two sort of tap-ins, and I’m just glad to be there and get them.”

The forward has also urged his Newcastle teammates to keep their heads in the coming weeks.

The win over Brentford moved them up to second in the Championship table, just a point behind league leaders Norwich City.

They will firmly have their eye on taking that top spot for themselves when they take on Barnsley on Tuesday evening and Gayle says it is important they keep their focus.

“It’s important to get momentum in this league, and we had it before the international break, but it’s important to keep focus and concentrate too. Otherwise, you’ll get turned over by any team in this league. Anyone can beat anyone,” he added.
