According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic are closing in on a deal to bring in Peterborough United assistant Gavin Strachan as a new coach.

Celtic have lost Damien Duff from their coaching team. The Irishman has returned home, and will be coaching with the Republic of Ireland national team.

The Bhoys have been considering their options for a replacement, and despite in-house options at Neil Lennon’s disposal, an external appointment will be made.

Peterborough assistant Strachan is set to make the move to Parkhead, despite having strong ties with Posh boss Darren Ferguson. The Bhoys seemingly simply seem to be too good to turn down.

Strachan is believed to be close to Celtic assistant John Kennedy. The pair allegedly completed their coaching badges together, so they could now reunite at Celtic.

Compensation still needs to be thrashed out, but Strachan is expected to make the move this coming week. The 41-year-old would be making an emotional move, given that his father Gordon was Celtic manager for four years.

Following in his father’s footsteps would be difficult to turn down, and after five years of assisting Ferguson, the Aberdeen-born coach is now nearing his big move.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has also spoken to the Daily Record about the situation, confirming that they will allow ‘fantastic’ Strachan to make the move to ‘massive club’ Celtic.

“We’ve spoken to Celtic and we’re not going to stand in Gavin’s way,” said Fry. “If they choose him, there’s a deal in place and it would be another great signing for Neil and Celtic. They’re a massive club and when Celtic come calling you can’t stand in anyone’s way. Gavin’s a fantastic coach. We’ll wish him and Celtic all the best,” he added.
