Sheffield Wednesday eventually signed Jacob Butterfield from Derby County, with Sam Winnall heading in the opposite direction and Bryson moving to Cardiff City.

Gary Rowett claims Sheffield Wednesday asked about signing Derby County midfielder Craig Bryson.

Bryson was loaned to Cardiff City on the final day of the summer transfer window, with Derby thinking they’d signed Birmingham City’s Mikael Kieftenbeld as the 30-year-old’s replacement, only for the deal to fall through on Thursday.

But Bryson wasn’t the only departure from the Rams’ engine room, with Jacob Butterfield moving to Wednesday in another temporary deal, which saw Owls striker Sam Winnall travelling in the opposite direction.

Earlier this week Rowett’s Hillsborough counterpart Carlos Carvalhal told BBC Radio Sheffield that it was Derby who initiated the trade, claiming: “It was not us that chose (to get rid of) Winnall. Derby requested Winnall, we requested Butterfield.”

But Rowett recalls a different version of events.

He told BBC Derby Sport: “Contrary to reports, Sheffield Wednesday actually asked for Craig Bryson first.”

According to the Sheffield Star, Wednesday have an option to sign permanently at the end of his loan spell, though Derby will have to negotiate separately if they want Winnall to return full-time.

Winnall’s move to Derby sees him reunited with Rams boss Gary Rowett, who was number 2 to Paul Peschisolido when the striker was on loan at Burton Albion six years ago.
