The Derby County manager has been speaking out about the future of on-loan Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Andreas Weimann.

Signed under former Derby County manager Paul Clement, striker Andreas Weimann has struggled for opportunities at Pride Park. After being forced to play mostly wide on the left as part of Derby County’s 4-3-3 formation, the attacker has failed to nail down a place in the Rams side, and was recently sent out on loan by former Rams boss Steve McClaren to Wolverhampton Wanderers for the remainder of the season.
Since joining Wolves, and linking up with former boss Paul Lambert, Andreas Weimann’s form has significantly improved. This is most likely down to the fact that Weimann has been allowed to play in his natural position, playing off a striker or target man. However, the impact Lambert has had on the Austrian cannot be underestimated. At Aston Villa, Lambert got the best out of Weimann, and he appears to be doing the same now at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
After his excellent performances, Wolverhampton Wanderers fans are keen to see the club do a deal for Weimann in the summer. However, Gary Rowett looks set to frustrate Wolves in their pursuit of the striker, suggesting recently that the striker still has a future at Pride Park.
Speaking to RamsTV, Rowett said: “I’ve contacted Jamie Hanson [on loan at Wigan], I’ve contacted Andreas Weimann and contacted Chris [Martin – on loan at Fulham].
“I know there’s been some reports around Wolves, with people saying that they [Wolves] can sign him. That’s fine, I’ve got no problem with that, but the player has got to want to go there, and all we can do is make the players know of our plans for them moving forward.”

With Rowett known to favour a 4-2-3-1 formation, his style and system may well suit Andreas Weimann, and he could be set to offer the player a more consistent place in the side. However, Rowett also appeared to make it clear that if the player wants to go, a deal could be done.
So, should Wolves now kick on with convincing the Austrian to leave Pride Park for Molineux? Or could the former Birmingham City manager be set to put a cat amongst the pigeons?
