Derby boss says he has a long affinity with the club, showing why he was never right for the Nottingham Forest position.

Gary Rowett was claimed to be very close to landing the Nottingham Forest job in January, having been lined up by the American consortium seeking to buy the club.

The Sun reported it was all but done, only for the takeover to collapse and Rowett’s interest in the position waned as a result.

Two months on and Rowett has landed the job at Derby County instead, and was unveiled to the press yesterday ahead of this weekend’s East Midlands derby.

At his press conference, Rowett inadvertently discussed why he was never cut out for the Nottingham Forest position anyway.

He played for Derby during his time as a player, and told how the club remain special to him and always have done.

The rivalry between the two clubs is often very bitter, and will be in full effect this weekend as each team seek to land a blow on the other’s seasons, and drag their opponents into the relegation mire.

Rowett is a Derby man, and would clearly have taken some adjustment to the Nottingham Forest gig.

He is highly professional as his previous stints as a manager show, but would his heart really have been in the Forest role like it is Derby?
