Gary Rowett doesn’t think Leeds or Norwich will finish in the top two at the end of the season

Leeds United are currently sitting behind Championship leaders Norwich City in the table going into another crucial set of fixtures.

Gary Rowett has questioned whether Leeds can maintain their ‘energy levels’ as they bid to finish in the top two places of the Championship.

The former Stoke City boss also stated that Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t look like the type of character that would ‘change’ or ‘comprise’ their energy levels.

At this moment in time, Leeds are sitting in an automatic place in the second tier of English football, level on points with leaders Norwich, but three points behind third-placed Sheffield United.

Rowett, who recently left his role at Stoke, offered his thoughts on the Championship title race as he seemingly questioned Leeds and whether they can maintin their current position.

“I’m not sure they [Norwich & Leeds] will be [in the top two come the end of the season],” Rowett told Sky Sports News on 07/02/2019 at 18:53 pm. “But I think those two have been fantastic and very, very impressive this season.

“They [Leeds] have a really young side with incredible energy,” Rowett later told EFL Matters on Sky Sports. “But when you are a team that relies on that energy so much, you wonder whether they can maintain it. That’s just a question. It doesn’t mean they are not going to.

“What do you do now? Do you start to change that? [energy levels] Do you start to comprise? He [Bielsa] doesn’t look like the type of character that would.”

During their last league encounter, Bielsa’s side suffered a damaging home defeat to Norwich City which allowed them to leapfrog their promotion rivals in the table.

Now, the Yorkshire outfit, who have not tasted Premier League football for over a decade, will travel to Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough at the weekend in what will be a tough encounter.

Boro were in FA Cup action on Tuesday night and they suffered a defeat to League Two outfit Newport County as Pulis will no doubt be looking for a response from his side.

A win for the home side at the Riverside Stadium will result in Boro closing the gap on Leeds to four points – they can lose second spot on Friday night if Sheffield United beat Aston Villa.
