The new Derby County manager is keen to get as hands on as possible when it comes to Derby County transfers this summer.

With a summer of changes expected at Pride Park, many Derby County fans are eager to see who new boss Gary Rowett intends to bring into the club, who he intends to keep and who he plans to sell. The Rams have spent massive amounts of money over the last few years, but have continued to come up short in their fight for promotion.

At times, Derby County’s recent failures have been partly blamed on the club’s poor recruitment. Signings such as Bradley Johnson, Nick Blackman and Andreas Weimann have struggled intermittently at Pride Park, raising questions over just who has been responsible for the club’s recruitment policies.

But under Gary Rowett, fans can rest assured that their manager will be at the forefront of all transfer dealings this time around. Speaking to Derby County’s YouTube Channel RamsTV, Gary Rowett confirmed that he will be getting hands on this summer in all aspects of the club’s transfer business:

“For the last five years, we’ve sourced players through scouting networks, and thorugh our own networks which is important. I’ve always watched the players as well. I’ve never signed anyone that I haven’t watched extensively myself.

I’ve usually negotiated with the agents as well to the point where the final bits are done by the club, but the bulk of it has been done [by me] so that I know exactly what we’re getting into.”

And the Rams manager seemed delighted to be as involved as possible in the deals: “That’s the way I’ve enjoyed doing it in the past. There’s a lot more work for me to do. I wouldn’t be sat on a beach somewhere over the summer twiddling my thumbs.

It’ll be a tough summer, we know that. It won’t be a quick summer. I’ll be really hands on with the people at the club, but hopefully we’ll get the fruits of that labour.

After years of failing at the final hurdle, Derby County fans are hoping that next year could well be their year, and if they can get the transfer bit right this time around, there’s no doubting that Gary Rowett looks like the right man to take the club forward.

It’s fair to say that it’s going to be an interesting summer for Derby County supporters. But when isn’t it?!
