Leeds United are one of the favourites to earn promotion to the Premier League this season.

Gary Rowett has warned Leeds United that they need ‘a couple of signings’ before deadline day because they may fall into the same problems as last season.

The former Championship manager feels that Leeds lack of squad depth ‘killed them’ last season and they ‘relied too much’ on their younger players towards the back end of the last campaign.

At this moment in time, Leeds and their manager Marcelo Bielsa will be focused on their Championship opener against Bristol City on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News (03/08/2019 at 2:50 pm), Rowett urged Leeds to bulk up their squad before Thursday’s deadline.

“The squad depth killed them in the end,” Rowett told Sky Sports News. “If you are going to play with that much energy. They can maintain it in terms of their levels, but can they keep everyone fit for long enough because there is this massive, massive demand.

“I just felt last year, they had some great young players coming through, but they just relied on them too much in the last few games because of some of the injuries. I think they need to make a couple of signings.”

Lack of squad depth was a problem for Leeds last season, but their lead up to the new season hasn’t exactly started in the manner in which they would have liked.

Centre-back Pontus Jansson made the surprise move to Brentford, whilst the futures of a number of Elland Road stars is coming into question before Thursday’s deadline.

Keeping hold of their current players, adding a centre-back, perhaps a forward and a midfielder, would be ideal for the club in their race for promotion.
