Gary Player is one of the most outspoken people in the game of golf.

Player is one of the greatest golfers of all time, so he is in a position whereby he has the authority to say anything he likes about the modern game.

Bryson DeChambeau is someone who has caught the South African’s attention on numerous occasions in the past.

Gary Player and DeChambeau are like chalk and cheese when it comes to their respective approaches to the game.

However, the nine-time major champion is a big fan of the American’s golf game.

Player has admitted that he respects DeChambeau as a person as well, and that is the most important thing after all.

Gary Player gives verdict on how Bryson DeChambeau treats golf fans

Player spoke to the High Performance Podcast about a wide range of topics.

As conversation turned to the modern-day game, the nine-time major champion responded when asked about how the best players have an obligation to give back to the fans.

The money they are playing today is enormous. When I say enormous, whatever you think, times it by five. That is fine as long as you realise that you have a debt incurred and that without the people you would not be making that money, Player said.

I tell you, the two best in the world today are Bryson DeChambeau and Tommy Fleetwood. They work with the galleries, they work with the people, they go to children, they are never tired of signing autographs.

We asked a top player the other day, as we do some work for Tunnels to Towers, they bring the soldiers back that have one leg, no eyes, no arms, and they give them a home and pay their mortgage.

We wanted to get 10 flags signed by a top player. His manager said ‘that’s a bit much, 10 flags’. I sat down and signed 2000 autographs in the last month! It’s a pleasure because I have been given the love and the support.

‘Tiredness’ is in the mind Gary Player says

Player places much emphasis on the strength of the mind.

What do you think about Bryson DeChambeau's conduct with the media?

The South African explained how things like tiredness and happiness are choices.

I will sign and sign and sign and never say that I am tired, he said.

Tiredness is in the mind. I will never forget saying to one of my caddies, when we were playing 36 holes, he said ‘man I’m tired’.

I said if I offered you £5000 would you run to the clubhouse which is two miles away with vigour. He said I sure as hell would. I said you just told me you were exhausted.

The human being is a tough person but he’s also a weak person. So you have the choice, just like happiness, happiness is a choice.
