Tottenham Hotspur have not won the top flight title since 1961.

Assistant Manager Gary Neville looks on during an England training session at St Georges Park on May 30, 2016 in Burton on Trent, England.

Gary Neville spoke exclusively to Sky Sports about Tottenham’s chances of enjoying a successful Premier League campaign this season, and responded when asked whether Mauricio Pochettino’s men will challenge for the league title.

Spurs undoubtedly have an incredibly strong starting XI, but there are question marks hanging over their heads as to whether they have enough strength in depth to mount a sustained title challenge.

Pochettino failed to sign a single player during the summer transfer window – the first time that has happened in the Premier League since the new system was introduced in 2002.

Tottenham have made a decent start to this season, however, and currently sit in fifth spot in the table, just two points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.

Neville explained why he believes Spurs are not in the title race, though, when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports:

“No, I don’t think Spurs are in the title race. This is a team that two or three years ago had a real chance. I think they are a really good team that I enjoy watching, but what has happened in that two years is there was a lull, Leicester won it and the year Chelsea won it there was a real chance Spurs could challenge. I think this Man City and Liverpool team are a step ahead. What has happened is Tottenham have maybe stayed at the same level, which is a really high level, but those two teams have improved enormously and that is now where the problem lies for Tottenham.”

Next up for Tottenham is a clash against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on Monday night, and the game will serve as a barometer of just where Poch’s side are at this season.

And a win against City would surely put the north London outfit right in the mix for the league title.
