Gary Neville has stated that the Premier League should ‘stop their representatives’, in this case, Aston Villa’s Christian Purslow, from doing interviews after his recent comments, as he told Sky Sports.
All of this stems from Tracey Crouch’s fan-led review into English football and comments from Villa’s Chief Executive who has spoken against the idea.
There have been some strong comments coming from the boardrooms of Premier League clubs, including Villa, Leeds United and West Ham United.
Purslow, Angus Kinnear and Karen Brady have been critical of the proposal being put out there, as Villa’s man upstairs stated that there is the danger of ‘killing the golden goose’.
Neville, who is the co-owner of League Two side Salford, has vested interest in all of this from a very different perspective than those in England’s top-flight.
And when Purslow’s comments were put to the Sky pundit, he issued the following response:
Sky Sports presenter David Jones asked Neville: “Christian Purslow, the Aston Villa CEO has raised the point about the danger of ‘killing the golden goose if we over-regulate a highly successful, financial and commercial operation’.
“Could there be a danger by putting more regulations on the Premier League clubs, you actually unintentionally have less money going down the pyramid?”
Neville responded: “I think the smart thing for the Premier League to do is to ask their representatives to stop doing interviews because they’re not helping their own cause.”
What has happened to Bury and what is currently happening at Derby County is alarming, worrying and just a reminder of how bleak things are outside of the Premier League.
The 72 clubs in the football league might not get the limelight of those in England’s top-flight, but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be highlighted.
If a club the size of Derby can find itself in their current mess, then this current road will take down a much bigger giant one day.
Therefore, it’s understandable why an independent regulator is being put in place because things certainly can’t carry on like they are.
