Pundit Gary Neville believes that Liverpool could be ‘sly’ and ‘clever’ with an under-the-radar signing during the January transfer window.

Liverpool started 2024 with a victory as they beat Newcastle United 4-2 at Anfield on Monday night.

The Reds were dominant throughout and made it count in the second half, finding the net four times after the break.

Liverpool now sit three points clear of Aston Villa at the top of the Premier League table and five points clear of Arsenal, who have been touted as a major title challenger.

Gary Neville comments on Liverpool transfer business

Jurgen Klopp may feel that Liverpool can win the title this season but there may be a temptation to make a new signing or two this month.

We can’t see Liverpool striking a huge deal but Gary Neville can see the Reds doing something before the window slams shut.

Neville told Sky Sports on Monday night that he thinks Liverpool will act like they aren’t going to do any business in January.

However, Neville believes that Liverpool are ‘sly’ and ‘clever’ in the market and will be looking to make a signing without much fuss.

Neville thinks that Klopp will be paying close attention to the market in case a perfect opportunity arises – and even believes that the Liverpool boss could convince the board into a deal.

“Liverpool, they do it differently here in the sense that, I don’t think they’ll announce it, they will probably tell everybody… Jurgen Klopp will go into press conferences and say that they’re not in the transfer market, that they’re not interested in anybody,” said Neville. “But then they are quite sly and they’re clever behind the scenes and they could just go and try and pinch someone to improve them.”

“The last thing you want to do is to announce to everybody that you’re looking for an X player or this player, and then everyone sort of waits for the call to come. Liverpool haven’t been like that, they do their business in a smart manner and I think that Jurgen Klopp will be keeping his eyes open and just making sure that nothing slips by, because, if something becomes available, I think he’s the type of manager that will convince the board here to do a bit of business for him,” he added.

Liverpool have struck a couple of sneaky deals in recent January windows, first pouncing to sign Cody Gakpo amid links with other Premier League clubs.

That deal seemingly came out of nowhere with Liverpool managing to keep it under wraps ahead of the January window.

Liverpool also swooped in to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s move to sign Luis Diaz in 2022.

There weren’t weeks of rumours about Wataru Endo before his move to Anfield in August either, with Liverpool again making their moves very quietly.

Neville seemingly believes that Liverpool will be doing the same again this month, working away without much speculation before striking with a deal to bolster Klopp’s squad for the second half of the season.
