Gary Neville has told Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on Sky Sports on 1st May, that he has been surprised and confused by Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

Kane has been in the spotlight after claiming he touched a Christian Eriksen to score against Stoke City, and then being ridiculed by the FA’s official account on Twitter.

The Spurs forward has taken a great deal of criticism on social media, and there have been suggestions that his form has dipped.

Kane has not looked quite as sharp for Spurs in recent weeks, as he often does, despite scoring against Watford last night.

And Neville said: “I’ve been surprised and confused a little bit, as he’s intelligent and is a brilliant professional. But the distraction of the disputed goal and the social media thing the FA did… the way it’s been handled has been terrible.

“[England boss, Gareth] Southgate would be worried, I would think, because he’s had difficult run-ins to the last two major tournaments and under-performed. And there are just those signs again, on the pitch in the last two weeks, he’s not anywhere near he needs to be.”

Kane’s finish against Watford last night was impressively controlled, as he helped Mauricio Pochettino’s side complete a 2-0 win, but he still didn’t seem to be at his best.

Kane’s touch and link-up play were not as sharp as they have been, and he still seems to be struggling to find top form.

Spurs have just three games remaining this season, and England will be hoping their main goalscorer is back at his best by the time the World Cup commences.

England start their World Cup campaign with a match against Tunisia on the 18th June.
