Gary Neville has told Sky Sports that Tottenham boss Antonio Conte does not suit the Manchester United job. Conte has worked wonders at Spurs, taking them into the Champions League in fourth place this season.

Manchester United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November after a poor start to the season and decided to bring in interim boss Ralf Rangnick. It has gone from bad to worse for United, who ended up finishing in sixth place.

Only securing Europa League football due to West Ham’s defeat to Brighton, Erik Ten Hag was watching on at Selhurst Park as Wilfried Zaha scored the only goal of the game for Crystal Palace. Plenty of work to be done.

Conte was linked with the United job after Solskjaer’s sacking but Spurs moved first – and many have bemoaned that United did not get the Italian. Despite his Spurs success, Neville still does not think he would suit United.

“It is possible to think he’s a great coach but he’s not right for your club. I don’t think he’s the right fit for Manchester United, but he suits Tottenham and he’s done an incredible job,” Neville said, when asked about Conte.

While he might not be a good fit, he surely would have done a better job than Rangnick. After the match, Rangnick said he did not even know that Ten Hag was in the stands – he seems as if he was the only one in the dark.

Conte is not normally a long-term manager at one club, hopping between Europe’s illustrious best for two or three seasons. Chelsea, Inter Milan, Juventus are all examples. At United, they need someone to build.

So Neville has a point in that regard. But there is no doubt that the Italian genius would have done a much-better job than Rangnick, and probably got United into fourth ahead of Tottenham this season.
