Tottenham Hotspur midfielders Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen really struggled to get involved for Mauricio Pochettino’s side yesterday.

Gary Neville has told Sky Sports, during their live coverage of Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Liverpool, that Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen really disappointed him at Anfield.

Alli and Eriksen were both selected to start in Spurs’s midfield against Liverpool but failed to show their best, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Alli and Eriksen are two of Tottenham’s most creative players, but they struggled to retain possession for their side against Liverpool.

And Neville feels that Alli has really gone off the boil at Tottenham in recent years.

“Alli and Eriksen have been really poor. So disappointed in those two on the ball,” he said.

“Alli I thought was a young Roy Keane in terms of his mentality when I first started working with him for England.

“He was aggressive, box to box, could score a goal, was nasty, was taking the ball, could pass, and seemed to have all the qualities you would want.

“That is a poor version of Dele Alli that. He’s been like that for 12 months now, he’s got to sort himself out. It’s not good enough.”

Eriksen was played on the right hand side of Tottenham’s midfield, and was tasked with tracking the runs of Andy Robertson for much of the game.

The Dane did much of his work inside his own half, as he struggled to stop Robertson putting crosses into the box.

Alli was also positioned in a fairly deep central role, which arguably doesn’t suit him.

The England international is better in advanced areas, but he rarely had a chance to show his ability on the ball in the Liverpool half.

Spurs actually took the lead in the contest, but they never looked comfortable, and were ultimately undone by two second-half goals from Liverpool, who ensured that they left Merseyside empty handed.
