Gary Neville has slammed Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero after his performance against Liverpool.

Neville has highlighted Romero as part of a defensive ‘shambles’ for Tottenham against Liverpool on Sunday.

Tottenham were remarkably 3-0 down inside 15 minutes and staring down the barrel of another thumping.

Spurs did haul themselves back to 3-3, only to somehow lose the game in injury time.

Neville really wasn’t impressed with Tottenham defender Romero and his role in another terrible Spurs start.

‘Absolute shambles’

Pundit Neville told Sky Sports (30/04, 16:43) that he felt Romero and Eric Dier were ‘all over the place’ against Liverpool.

One moment really angered Neville as Romero went flying into a challenge on Cody Gakpo, giving away a penalty.

There was just no need to go to ground in that situation and Romero put Tottenham 3-0 down with that challenge.

Neville called Romero’s lack of composure absolutely ‘staggering’ whilst slamming Dier too.

“They are all over the place, absolute shambles they are at the back. The lack of composure from Romero is staggering and the choice of charging out from Dier, with his experience, he’s done it two or three times already,“ said Neville.

Cristian Romero must cut out these errors

We all know how good Romero can be at his very best.

The 24-year-old is a quality centre back in terms of his reading of the game and even his ability on the ball; we saw that with his assist for Son Heung-min on Sunday.

You don’t want to completely take the aggressive streak out of Romero but there is a time and a place.

2-0 down at Liverpool and fearing another Newcastle-esque hammering? There was just no need to fly into a challenge inside his own box.

Romero should be a player that Tottenham build around for years to come – especially when earning around £165,000-a-week in wages.

Romero just won’t go to the next level if he doesn’t alter his game and show a little more composure though, and Sunday’s penalty decision summed that up.
