Liverpool came so close to winning their first league title since 1990 this season.
Gary Neville suggested that Liverpool really took him by surprise this season, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
The Reds experienced a magnificent Premier League campaign, but eventually fell just one point short in the race for the title, after amassing an incredible 97 points.
Unfortunately for Liverpool, Manchester City were irrepressible, winning their last 14 games in a row.
The Merseyside outfit improved beyond all recognition this term, and City will now be fully aware that they will face a real challenge, if they are to win the league title for a third consecutive season next time around.
Jurgen Klopp’s men can take great heart form how they pushed City all the way, however, and they do, of course, still have a Champions League final against Tottenham to look forward to next month.
And Neville admitted that Liverpool were far better than he ever imagined they would be this season, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo:
“Liverpool are far better than I ever imagined and have done far more than I ever imagined. I never thought that squad was capable of mounting a challenge for the title like they have and the Champions League. I thought they would fall in the last month but incredible credit to them. They have played like champions all season, they have fallen short and haven’t won it.”
Liverpool boss Klopp will surely be looking to strengthen his squad once again this summer, in the hope that he can lead his team to that elusive Premier League title next season.
