Gary Neville thinks that Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof would be brilliant at Liverpool, as per his comments on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

Lindelof has come under fire at Old Trafford this season with his performances not always the most convincing.

However, Neville thinks that if he had Virgil van Dijk alongside him at Jurgen Klopp’s side then the £39 million Swede (EuroSport) would actually look like an excellent defender.

“Lindelof’s problem is Maguire. Maguire’s problem is Lindelof,” Neville said.

“I think if you put Lindelof alongside Van Dijk at Liverpool, I think he’s a really good player. He understands the game, reads the game, and is a good defender.

“The problem is he is alongside somebody who isn’t the most mobile in Maguire.

“If Liverpool were looking for a centre-back pairing I think he’d do a really good job alongside Van Dijk, but I don’t think he does a good job with Maguire.”

Liverpool are, of course, highly unlikely to actually go out and sign Lindelof – but the point remains an interesting one.

Liverpool certainly would have been grateful for having Lindelof in their squad this season, as they have struggled so badly at the back.

Klopp’s men have suffered long term injuries to Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip – which has meant that they have had to put together a makeshift backline in many of their games.

That has badly impacted them, with the Reds struggling to keep pace with the Champions League chasing clubs around them.

United, meanwhile, are currently sat in second place in the table, but they too have not looked entirely secure at the back all season.
