Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Gary Neville has named Virgil van Dijk and Phil Foden as the two players he’d most like to play alongside in the modern Premier League.

The Sky pundit was taking a number of questions as we celebrate 30 years of the Premier League, and he was asked which current player he’s most like to have played alongside.

Despite being a Manchester United legend, Neville picked two players from Manchester City and Liverpool, stating that van Dijk and Foden would be his dream teammates in the modern era.

What’s been said?

Neville spoke about who he’d most like to play with from the current crop of Premier League players.

“From a defensive point of view, van Dijk, from an attacking point of view a young English player, I always look at Phil Foden and think how have United not got him as a youngster? You look at him and think he’s the type of player who you’d think what a player he is, he’ll be around a long time as well so I’ll say Foden.

Can’t blame him

We really can’t blame Gary Neville for picking Virgil van Dijk as his dream modern-day teammate. After all, the Dutchman is arguably the best centre-back on the planet.

It must be so reassuring as a full-back to know that even if you’re beaten by a winger, your centre-half will likely put out any fires in the final third, and that’s exactly the type of confidence van Dijk instils in his teammates.

Neville was lucky enough to play with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Jaap Stam and Nemanja Vidic during his time at United, and there’s an argument to make that van Dijk is even better than those Premier League legends.

The Dutchman would be a dream teammate for any player.
