As previously reported by the Athletic, Liverpool decided to make Mohamed Salah their highest-ever paid player by handing him a bumper three-year contract extension in the summer.
For months on end, there was speculation about Salah looking for a pay rise, that would put him alongside some of the most handsomely paid players in the Premier League.
With the Reds finally giving in to his request, it seemed as if the Egyptian international would now be fully focused on having yet another cracking season.
However, the prolific winger has been far from his electric self this season, with 6 goals in 13 league games for Liverpool.
Assessing the 30-year old’s output as well as his overall displays, it’s safe to say that he has failed to recapture his form from especially the first half of last term, where he was widely hailed as the best player in the world.
Despite Mohamed Salah struggling for large parts of this season, Gary Neville still believes he is Liverpool’s best player.
“It was a positive that Salah came back to his best [against Tottenham]. I think the game I saw first where I thought ‘he’s back’ was the Man City game”, he said on The Overlap Fan Debate.
Neville continued, “He was a different level. I thought yesterday [against Spurs], I thought the stark thing about Liverpool was that in the past three, four, five years, Salah’s been class but he’s not stood above all the rest of them.”

“He’s been one of the great performers. At the moment, when he plays, he looks on a different level to the rest of his teammates. Now his teammates are good, don’t get me wrong, but it is a little bit of a worry for Liverpool because he looks like an unbelievable player out there at the moment. By far, the best player on the pitch.”
While Mohamed Salah certainly has a shout for being Liverpool’s main man, many would argue that for a chunk of last season and so far this term, Alisson Becker has been the side’s best performer.
