The youngster was given the task of leading the line for the Toffees, and he coped well.

Calvert-Lewin was able to stretch City’s defence throughout the game, with his pace and power proving to be a major weapon.

The England youth international set up Wayne Rooney to score Everton’s goal during the contest, and after the match Neville was full of praise for the prospect. The former Manchester United defender said: “He [Ronald Koeman] pointed towards Calvert Lewin, who I thought was outstanding. It was the best I’ve seen him.”

Everton are still thought to be looking for a new striker, so whether Calvert-Lewin will retain his place up-front remains to be seen.

The former Sheffield United man is a favourite of Ronald Koeman though, with his versatility proving very useful.

Everton are next in action on Thursday, when they take on Hajduk Split in the Europa League.
