Gary Neville was full of praise for Christian Eriksen on Sky Sports (14/10/20, 19:00 pm start) and the career he had at Tottenham Hotspur as he impressed at Wembley against England last night.
The popular TV pundit stated that Eriksen first joined Spurs as a ‘nearly man’ but ended up becoming an ‘exceptional’ player for the club.
Eriksen was back on familiar territory on Wednesday night because he scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot to help Denmark beat England 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League.
It was a Man of the Match display from the technically-gifted Dane and Neville, during his commentary stint, shared his thoughts on the playmaker.
“He came to Tottenham as a sort of nearly man, didn’t he?!” Neville told Sky Sports. “Almost wasn’t quite sure about him. But he was exceptional at Tottenham. He had a brilliant career there.
“I think what happened at Spurs, especially under Pochettino, is that Eriksen was able to find a position because when he came to Spurs it was ‘where do you play him?’ Off the left? As a 10? in midfield?”
“He became a really responsible player, just as Kevin de Bruyne has ended up playing in midfield for Manchester City. Eriksen ended up playing in midfield for Tottenham and ended up doing the other part of the game, as well, not just the attacking part.”
During his time in North London, Eriksen glided around the pitch with ease and had a great knack of finding that killer pass.
Whether it was his left foot or his right foot, Eriksen was always a progressive passer and someone who was easy on the eye because of his ability to hurt opposition players with his technical gift.
The manner in which he left Spurs for Inter back in January might have slightly dampened the great times he had in North London, but those Spurs fans can now reflect on the great memories he provided them.
