Gary Neville has praised Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson as the key to the team’s success.
Liverpool signed Alisson from Roma in 2018 and he made an instant contribution to the team, an upgrade on Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet.
Neville is quoted in The Mail commenting that he believes Alisson is the reason Liverpool are set to win the title.
He said: “Two or three years ago I said Liverpool would never win the League whilst their current goalkeeper was in position.
“Once your goalkeeper is calm, authoritative and saves most shots on his goal it gives confidence to the rest of the team. The impact of that is absolutely incredible.
“Van Dijk is one of the best centre halves I have ever seen live but for me Alisson has been the big change.”
Neville went onto rank Alisson alongside Manchester United greats Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, who like the Brazilian, also won Champions League trophies.
Alisson has been important for Liverpool over the past two years, but this season has not all been down to him.
He was injured at the start of the season, and missed two months of action, with former West Ham goalkeeper Adrian filling in adeptly during this spell.
Liverpool’s defence deserve credit for helping the team through that tricky stretch.
Alisson was missed in March’s Champions League defeat at Anfield against Atletico Madrid, with Adrian’s limitations highlighted by the Spanish side.
