Gary Neville has responded to Ruben Amorim’s sacking by naming three well-known head coaches he thinks could be good fits for the Manchester United job.

Manchester United moved swiftly on Monday morning to dismiss Ruben Amorim, with the club sitting sixth in the Premier League at the time of his departure. Tensions between the board and the Portuguese coach reportedly escalated after he challenged Ineos following Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Leeds, prompting the club to act.

With Amorim gone, Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge of the first team for at least the next one or two matches. Attention has now turned to the long-term solution, with Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner emerging as a leading candidate, while Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Michael Carrick have been linked with interim roles for the remainder of the season.

It was inevitable that Gary Neville would weigh in on the situation, and the former United captain did just that on The Gary Neville Podcast. While he stopped short of naming who he believes should be appointed next, Neville outlined three managers he holds in particularly high regard.

Neville said he admires England manager Thomas Tuchel, Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone and Athletic Club’s Ernesto Valverde. However, he also questioned whether any of them would realistically be available to United, stressing that the club’s recruitment and scouting structure must already have a clear plan in place for the next appointment.

Assessing Simeone and Valverde’s current seasons

Securing Simeone would likely prove extremely difficult, given his long-standing position at Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side currently sit on 38 points from 19 matches but will need greater consistency if they are to secure Champions League qualification.

Valverde’s Athletic Club are presently eighth in La Liga and remain in contention on multiple fronts, including an upcoming Supercopa de España semi-final against Barcelona. Their ongoing commitments could further complicate any potential move to Old Trafford.
