Gary Neville has admitted that he feels ‘sad’ whenever he visits Newcastle because a club of that stature shouldn’t be thinking ‘it’s a miracle if we stay up’.

Rafa Benitez’ side suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchesester United on Wednesday night, with Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford getting on the scoresheet for the away side.

The result leaves Newcastle two points above the Premier League’s relegation zone as they have only picked up three points on one occasion from their previous eight matches.

In December, Benitez stated that it would be a ‘miracle’ if the north-east club survived relegation to the Championship, as quoted by the Independent.

Prior to the club’s defeat to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, Neville responded to those comments as he offered some emotional views on their current situation and admitted that he ‘shouldn’t feel like that’.

“This is such a special place for football,” Neville told Sky Sports on 02/01/2019 7:20 pm. “This stadium is absolutely incredible and the idea that ‘it’s a miracle if we stay up’ this feeling that Newcastle are in this position, I cannot help but feel sad when I come up here.

“I shouldn’t feel like that when I come here because every club makes its own bed. They should be a club on the front foot all the time that dreams because every time you came up here in the mid-’90s, late ’90s, it was unbelievable.”

Under Mike Ashley’s ownership, the Magpies have suffered two relegations, most recently in 2016, with Benitez helping them make an instant return to the promise land.

At this moment in time, they will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they take on Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup Third Round on Saturday.

Newcastle will return to league action on January 12 when they face Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
