Gary Neville has claimed on Sky Sports (27/09/20 at 6:20 pm) that Liverpool will ‘gain in confidence’ after Manchester City were humiliated at home by Leicester City on Sunday.

In a quite disastrous start to the season, Pep Guardiola’s side shipped five goals at the Etihad to potentially provide a mini boost so early on in the season for the champions of England.

The Reds, who are in action tonight against a rejuvenated Arsenal side, can make it three wins from three if they can get past Guardiola’s former right-hand man in Mikel Arteta.

As City’s game was heading into stoppage time yesterday, Neville thinks that Liverpool will feel encouraged by what their rivals just produced.

“Was it eight points they dropped in the first eight games last season?” Neville asked on Sky Sports. “They never got back. You know the standard Liverpool are setting.

“If you think of the business they have done in the last week, I know it’s early, but Liverpool watching this game, they have got Arsenal [on Monday night], they will gain in confidence from this. You do!

“Not that they will be thinking they’ll win the league because City aren’t at it, they know there is a long way to go. But just, you see your main rivals losing like this, it just gives you encouragement. It makes you feel stronger.”

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

City gave away three penalties during the game as their defensive fragilities were on show once more.

Eric Garcia, Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy all gave away the spot-kicks in a quite clumsy fashion to perhaps sum up where their side’s defence has been heading in recent years.

Guardiola could so with a Virgil van Dijk, who has hardly broken a sweat protecting his goal in recent seasons, with the leader of men, Jordan Henderson, ensuring their ‘monster mentality’ never drops by even an inch.
