Gary Neville has admitted to Sky Sports that he may annoy Tottenham Hotspur fans, but he still feels Harry Kane would make a smart buy for Manchester United.

Rumours of a potential departure for Kane have died down, after he suggested on Instagram early on in the summer that he would only stay at Tottenham if he felt they were progressing.

But Neville thinks that pursuing a deal for the Spurs forward makes a lot of sense for United, even if the comments may irk some Tottenham fans.

“It could be any number of players that become available that would improve United. If Harry Kane became available, and Tottenham fans will be saying why are you trying to get him out of Spurs again, but if he became available, he’d obviously improve United’s squad,” he said.

“So it doesn’t have to be a certain player.”

United would almost certainly be interested in Kane if he was to become available, but it seems highly unlikely that Tottenham would consider bids for their star man.

Kane has been integral under Jose Mourinho when he has been fit, and his goalscoring record has been highly encouraging.

Kane remains Tottenham’s star man, and without him they would surely have very little chance of challenging for the trophies that Mourinho wants them to win.

Spurs know that they will almost certainly have to improve on last season’s showing if they are to keep Kane at the club over the long term though.

Tottenham failed to live up to expectations last year, and no longer have Champions League football to offer the England captain.
