Gary Neville fears Julian Alvarez is set to make a huge impact with Manchester City this season after hearing encouraging noises about him.

City won the Premier League title last season but have been through major changes during this summer window.

Fernandinho, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus have all left the club, with the latter three joining Premier League rivals.

City have made some big additions too though with Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips arriving to bolster Pep Guardiola’s squad.

If there is one City signing that has slipped a little under the radar, it’s the arrival of Argentinian attacker Julian Alvarez.

City pounced to sign Alvarez in January but allowed him to stay with River Plate in January until this summer.

Alvarez, 22, emerged with River Plate and ultimately became a star with the Buenos Aires giants.

54 goals in 122 games for River was an impressive record, and even more so when you realise that 42 of them came in his last 72 games for the club.

Alvarez became one of the most in-demand talents in South America and City were more than happy to swoop in and secure him.

Alvarez hasn’t quite attracted the attention of Haaland but he has already shown his goalscoring capabilities.

The versatile attacker came off the bench to score against Liverpool in last weekend’s Community Shield at the King Power Stadium.

It likely isn’t enough for Alvarez to go ahead of Haaland in the pecking order but we could see plenty of him moving forward.

Pundit and former Manchester United ace Gary Neville certainly seems worried having spoken about Alvarez ahead of the new Premier League season.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Fan Debate, Neville noted that has heard from people around City and around Manchester that Alvarez is going to be ‘absolutely top class’.

Neville admitted that such a verdict is ‘scary’ and believes that City must have a talent on their hands if they were willing to let Raheem Sterling go in order to bring in Alvarez.

“The boy Alvarez, if you speak to people at City or around here, they reckon he’s going to be absolutely top class,” said Neville. “That scares me, because these people, to be fair, are knowledgeable, the ones that you speak to, and that’s the scary thing. So they let Sterling go because they think the boy Alvarez is going to be a top player,” he added.
