Liverpool recorded a goalless draw away at Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were left in awe at Virgil van Dijk’s display during Liverpool’s goalless draw at Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Former Manchester United defender Neville uttered the words ‘oh my goodness’ when reacting to some of his defensive work in what was a hostile Goodison Park crowd.

Despite a poor performance from Liverpool’s front three, Van Dijk remained calm and composed at the back to ensure his team kept another clean sheet in the league.

Speaking during their commentary stint for Sky Sports Premier League (03/03/2019 at 5:55 pm), Carragher, and Neville, in particular, were simply amazed by what they were seeing.

“What a player he is by the way,” said Neville on Sky Sports Premier League 5.55pm “Oh my goodness, every time somebody comes near him. He just deals with it. Effortlessly.

Carragher added: “With his performance today Virgil van Dijk, I think may be well in the run in, if not a shoo-in for player of the year. 15 goals Liverpool have conceded.”

The result is damaging for Jurgen Klopp and his team because it means they are now a point behind Manchester City in the table with nine games of the season remaining.

Over the course of the campaign, the Reds have been utterly dominant in defence, conceding just 15 goals from their 29 matches – the next best are leaders City who have shipped 20 goals.

The main reason behind their strong defensive structure has been Klopp’s decision to be less erratic from an attacking perspective, the presence of Van Dijk at the heart of the club’s defence and their summer signing Allison in between the sticks.

After that point at Goodison Park, Everton will now turn their attention to next Sunday when they host Sean Dyche’s Burnley at Anfield.
