The Liverpool defender is widely regarded to be one of the best centre-backs in world football.
Gary Neville raved about the quality of Virgil van Dijk, when speaking during Sky Sports’ broadcast of Liverpool’s game away at Southampton last night, suggesting that the centre-back is well on his way to becoming the best central defender in the world.
The Reds signed the 6ft 4in Dutchman from Southampton in January 2018, for a world record fee for a defender worth around £75 million, and he has since gone on to establish himself as a huge hit at Anfield.
The 27-year-old has played a key role for his side during their rise to the top of the Premier League table this season, and if Liverpool do go on to end their 29-year wait for a top flight title, they will have Van Dijk to thank.
And Neville admitted that he is a huge fan of the Liverpool centre-back, when speaking during Sky Sports’ broadcast of last night’s match, labelling him as an unbelievable player:
“It wasn’t the signing itself that surprised me, it was the amount. However, watching him in this last 12 months, he’s been absolutely outstanding. Varane and Ramos have been the best centre backs in the world for me over the past few years but there is no doubt this guy is going to be up there in the next few years as the best centre half in the world. In possession play, his passing is a joke. It’s unbelievable.100% my player of the year and there’s not anyone else close to him.”
Liverpool have just five Premier League games remaining this season, and they will most likely have to win every single one of them, if they are to win their first top flight title since 1990.
And if Van Dijk continues his fine form, the Reds will have every chance of doing just that.
