Gary Neville has joked that he will have to move to ‘Papa New Guinea’ if Liverpool end up winning the Premier League title this season.

The Reds recorded a comfortable 2-0 win at high-flying Wolves on Friday night with Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk getting on the scoresheet for the away side.

The result means that Liverpool are now four points clear of second-placed Manchester City in the table, but Pep Guardiola’s side can close that gap on Saturday afternoon if they beat Crystal Palace on home soil.

Regardless of the result at the Etihad Stadium, Jurgen Klopp’s men will be top of the table at Christmas and the thought of Manchester United’s bitter rivals winning the league is deeply worrying Neville.

“I do fear that this could be a season where Liverpool could win the league and I might have to move to Papua New Guinea or somewhere remote,” Neville joked to Sky Sports’ Premier League Channel on 21/12/2018 at 10:40 pm.

On the last two occasions where Liverpool were top at Christmas, under Brendan Rodgers and Rafa Benitez, they went on to lose the title in a narrow fashion.

But perhaps the biggest difference between this team and those sides are the number of clean sheets they are keeping this time around.

During this campaign, the Reds have kept 11 clean sheets from their 18 encounters as they are yet to concede more than a goal in a game in the league this season.

Van Dijk, who poked in Liverpool’s second goal against Wolves, has been a big part of that as he will now play an even more important role heading into the new year.
