Gary Neville has claimed that it ‘wouldn’t be a surprise’ if Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey earns an England call, as he told Sky Sports.
The former right-back added that England aren’t particularly blessed in the central midfield department, as he suggested that Villa’s thriving 20-year-old could fit into a ‘central midfield’ role.
There’s no doubt that Ramsey deserves the praise that has been coming his way this season because he has been outstanding.
The Villa academy product has the qualities to play a central midfield role, which would mean battling the likes of Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham for spots.
Now, he doesn’t get ahead of the likes of Rice and Phillips because they are more defensive-minded players, but perhaps playing further forward could be an option.
Nonetheless, this is what Neville had to say regarding Ramsey’s chances of earning that England call, as he seemingly thinks he can play deeper rather than further forward.
“I don’t think it’s an area England are particularly blessed in,” said Neville. “Central midfield, so it wouldn’t surprise me.”

One thing is for sure, Ramsey is putting his name in lights and he is being talked about regarding a possible call.
If Gareth Southgate does decide to put him up for discussion, then he will compare him with the likes of Mason Mount, Phil Foden and Emile Smith Rowe, to name a few for a possible spot.
All those players are either, well ahead of Ramsey on the domestic stage or have already earned their Three Lions caps, so are ahead of him in that respect.
Either way, there is no need to rush the young Englishman because he has enough time to break into the international setup and it doesn’t have to be this season.
