Gary Neville has told Sky Sports that he was worried for Leeds United’s finances if the Whites had been relegated to the Championship this season. Jesse Marsch guided his side to a stunning 2-1 away win at Brentford.
The win was enough, even though Burnley only had to match the Yorkshire side’s result. However, they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle – Callum Wilson scoring a brace for the Clarets. Their six-year stay is over.
Leeds, meanwhile, go into a third season in the Premier League and the board will back new boss Marsch. Brenden Aaronson is on his way already – in a £24million deal with personal terms done.
Asked about Leeds surviving relegation on the final day of the season, Manchester United legend Neville applauded Leeds. But he also said that he was worried for the Whites going down, and their finances.
“Leeds would have been in significant financial trouble if they’d have gone down. I didn’t fancy them. But well done to them, they were incredible. Well done to Jesse Marsch, too,” Neville said, during his analysis on Sky Sports.
Neville says he was worried for Leeds, if they had gone down
What a day for Leeds fans. A side with more injuries than most others this season, a side that have changed manager, but now a side that will stay in the Premier League. Huge fight, and character shown.
Now, they need to build. Plenty went there way on Sunday – Burnley’s result, Brentford’s missed chances, Jack Harrison’s deflected shot. But they need to be in control of their own destiny and new signings will help.
Aaronson is a good start. But a right-back, a centre-back, another midfielder, a replacement for Raphinha and a striker need to be on the list. Plenty of work for Victor Orta, then.
