Former Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce has strong links with Manchester United from his playing days.

Assistant Manager Gary Neville looks on during an England training session at St Georges Park on May 30, 2016 in Burton on Trent, England.

Gary Neville has suggested that former Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce could have been a useful appointment at Manchester United on the Debate, which was broadcast on Sky Sports last night.

Bruce was sacked as Villa boss earlier this season, after falling out of favour at Villa Park.

However, Neville that that Bruce could have made the step up from Villa to United on a temporary basis.

The Red Devils are set to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their next interim boss.

But Neville has suggested that Bruce would have been just as good an appointment for his former side.

“At this moment in time I can see the interim appointment for the next six months being someone who brings favour and good will,” Neville said.

“He fits into the category, as does Laurent Blanc, as would Steve Bruce, who I saw mentioned.

“These three, who know the club, would only have to steady the ship and hold to fort until the next four or five years.

“However, if they go and win the Champions League, which can happen, you say ‘okay, leave them in charge’.”

Bruce lost large sections of the fans at Villa, but would surely have been given more backing at United, due to his legendary status as a player.

Villa have gone from strength to strength since Bruce’s dismissal this season, with Dean Smith improving them considerably.

Villa were sitting in mid-table in the Championship with Bruce at the helm, but they are have quickly pushed up to the edge of the play offs now.
