Gary Neville has told The Sun that West Ham United youngster Declan Rice should not be playing for England.

The former Manchester United and England international defender believes that Rice, who can operate as a central defender or as a defensive midfielder, should not have been able to switch from playing for the Republic of Ireland to turning out for the Three Lions.

The 20-year-old played for the Republic of Ireland youth teams before featuring in three friendly internationals for the senior side.

Rice is now playing for the England national team and is regarded as a future star for the Three Lions.

Neville told The Sun about Rice: “I’ve heard he’s a really good lad, I just think that ultimately a player should not be allowed to play for his country’s senior team and then switch.

“It doesn’t feel right to me. It’s a really strange thing to see and ultimately Fifa and Uefa need to stop it.”

Promising player

Rice is one of the best and most promising young players in the Premier League, and he is a rising star, both for West Ham and England.

The 20-year-old has established himself as a key figure in the middle of the park for the Hammers, and he can only improve in the coming years.

According to WhoScored, Rice has four appearances in the Premier League for West Ham so far this season, while in 2018-19, he scored two goals in 34 league matches for the Hammers.
