Gary Neville has said on his podcast that he thinks that Tomas Soucek’s red card for West Ham United against Fulham at the weekend will be overturned.
The former Manchester United defender, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Soucek did not mean to hit Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in the face on purpose.
Deep into injury time during the Premier League game at Craven Cottage in London on Saturday, the West Ham defensive midfielder raised his elbow and caught Mitrovic in the face.
The former Newcastle United striker went down to the ground, and although it looked like it was an accident, after a VAR check, referee Mike Dean decided to send off the 25-year-old.
West Ham have announced on their official website that they will appeal against the red card.
Neville said on his podcast: “It just looked to me like he was trying to sort of make some space to clear himself. I think it will be overturned.”
Red card has to be overturned
In slow motion, it did look like Soucek had committed a foul, but when one watches the incident in real time, it is clear that it was an accident.
It would make sense for the red card to be overturned, as the defensive midfielder clearly did not mean it.
