Everton’s Jordan Pickford is a rising star in football.
Gary Neville has admitted to Sky Sports that he had serious doubts about England and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The 24-year-old saw his stock rise remarkably during the summer after helping the Three Lions to the semi-final of the World Cup.
Pickford, who joined Everton from Sunderland in 2017, was brilliant throughout the competition in Russia.
England have long endured problems with their goalkeeping situation, but in Pickford it seems like Gareth Southgate has an excellent solution to the issue that has dogged the country at international level over the past couple of decades.
And although Neville admits that the Toffees stopper – on £60,000 per week [Silly Season] – is beginning to win him over, the former Man United star did have reservations for a long time.
“I think the fact you get more time to play out a the back than you normally would in the Premier League,” he told Sky Sports.
“I think he’s suited to international football. I was nervous about him before the World Cup but he’s winning me over slowly.”
At 24, the Everton man is only going to get better and better.
He is still very, very young for a goalkeeper, easily has another 10 or 12 years in him and that’s a hell of a long time in football, when you’re playing every week.
Neville was right to reserve judgement, because you can never quite tell whether a promising goalkeeper fulfills his potential, but Pickford certainly seems well on the way.
