Tottenham Hotspur have recorded four points from their opening two Premier League matches.
Gary Neville brutally stated that ‘VAR’ was Tottenham’s ‘best player’ during their 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Saturday evening.
Once again, history repeated itself, as City were denied a late goal by VAR, with Gabriel Jesus’ late goal chalked off because of handball.
By the rulebook, the correct decision was made, but that hasn’t stopped the decision being criticised as the new handball rule caused more controversy in the Premier League.
Speaking to Sky Sports Premier League (17/08/2019) just after the goal was chalked off, Neville felt that Pep Guardiola will feel ‘wronged’ by two moments during the game.
“Those Tottenham fans in the far corner, they were jumping up and down wildly,” Neville told Sky Sports. “He will feel wronged by VAR today Pep Guardiola. Not just because of that one [Jesus disallowed goal], but the one in the first half, the Rodri challenge [and potential] penalty.
“And the Tottenham fans sing ‘VAR’. He’s probably been Tottenham’s best player actually. I cannot think of anyone more important for them today.”
From Tottenham’s standard, they were poor during the game, but the most important thing is that they left Manchester with a point to their name.
It means that they are still unbeaten this season as they host struggling Newcastle next Sunday before the much-awaited North London derby against Arsenal.
