Manchester United legend Gary Neville has stated that Manchester City are the greatest team to play in the Premier League era.
Pep Guardiola’s side retained their Premier League title despite a minor scare against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. The title was Manchester City’s fourth in the last eight years and they are now favourites to achieve an incredible treble with the FA Cup final against Watford coming up.
Speaking in the aftermath of the 4-1 triumph against Brighton, Neville heaped praise on Manchester City and their manager Pep Guardiola for their back-to-back title victories in the Premier League.
When asked if they were the greatest team in the Premier League era, Neville said: “I think so. There will be people who debate that.
“But seeing what they have done the last two seasons – last year was a great achievement, but when you win back-to-back titles, amassing the points they have, withstanding that challenge they have had from Liverpool – which was relentless right to the very end, makes them a great side.
“So yes, I think you can say this is the greatest in terms of points, which you cannot deny.”
His comments would have come in as a bit of a shock to Manchester United fans who have had their own phenomenal campaigns in the Premier League over the last two decades but considering City’s incredible season in the league which saw them amass a staggering 98 points, it is hard to disagree with Neville’s statement.
Neville continued with his admiration over Pep Guardiola’s achievements as a manager and claimed that he is now at the same level as Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho as the greatest managers to grace the Premier League.
