Gary Neville has told Sky Sports, during their coverage of Newcastle United’s match against Manchester City, that Jacob Murphy was lucky to stay on the pitch.

Murphy lunged into a challenge with Ilkay Gundogan and made contact high up on the German midfielder’s leg.

Murphy was not even booked for the foul, but Neville felt that the winger could have received his marching orders, on another day.

“I think it’s a red card. It’s a leg breaker,” Neville said. “It’s a poor, poor tackle. If you’re a professional and you see that, they’re the ones you don’t want.”

In the end, Murphy not being sent off had little impact on the result of the contest.

City still picked up the victory at St. James’ Park, and they were largely untroubled.

Pep Guardiola’s side missed a series of chances, but Newcastle showed little in the way of attacking intent.

Newcastle set out very defensively in the match, and a late header from Dwight Gayle was as close as they came to scoring.

Newcastle are now just one point away from the relegation zone, after winning just one of their last 10 matches.
