Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur side were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool yesterday.
Sanchez, who cost Spurs £40 million (London Evening Standard) back in 2017, was selected to start in the centre of Tottenham’s three man defence, but he never looked totally comfortable.
Indeed, Roberto Firmino managed to pull away from the Colombian centre-back to head home Liverpool’s first goal in the contest.
And Neville has suggested that Pochettino would have been better off playing Sanchez at either right or left centre-back, rather than in the middle of Spurs’ defence.
He said: “The one thing about the Spurs back three is Sanchez is in the middle of it.
“I always think he’s better being up against somebody rather than being the organiser or that composed centre-back, which you always associate with that central figure. He’s not someone who can really manage that line.”
Tottenham ended up switching to a four-man defence in the second half of the contest, and it was at that point when they really started to make an impact in the game.
Spurs managed to bring themselves level when Lucas Moura slotted home from close range.
However, Tottenham could not hold on to claim a point at Anfield, as Hugo Lloris made a terrible error in the last moment, and caused Toby Alderweireld to score an own goal.
Spurs’ place in the top four is now under serious pressure, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal pushing them hard.
