Gary Neville has stated that he ‘can’t believe’ how Tottenham transfer target, Romelu Lukaku, has performed for Chelsea this season, as he told the Overlap.

With Heung-Min Son winning the Golden Boot with 23 Premier League goals, Neville felt, at the start of the season, Lukaku would have matched those numbers produced by the Tottenham man.

In the end, the 29-year-old didn’t even hit double figures because he only scored eight Premier League goals after a near £100 million transfer last summer.

The last man to get the absolute best out of Lukaku was Spurs boss Antonio Conte at Inter Milan – that’s probably why his name is being linked to Chelsea’s London rivals.

But either way, Neville, who had Lukaku down to be the Premier League’s top-scorer this term, can’t believe what has happened to him.

“I had him down as the top-scorer,” said Neville. “I can’t believe how he has played.

“He did the interview, where he went to Italy and he talked about his nutrition and how he changed his lifestyle.

“But that seems to have gone out of the window. He has gone back to his Man United style. In Italy, there was a difference. A massive difference.

“I don’t know what it is. I can’t put my finger on it. Everton are a mystery. Man United are a complete mystery. But Lukaku is the other one.

“If you said to me, would he score more than 23 goals than Son and Salah? I would have said ‘yes, 23 goals, he would easily do that’. I can’t believe he’s not.”

LUKAKU IS NOT ELITE LIKE HARRY KANE

Harry Kane, even during a season where he started off pretty slowly, has still managed to out-perform Lukaku.

The England captain scored 17 Premier League goals this season and is an elite striker in world football.

But Lukaku, whether it be at Manchester United or Everton, has never been at the absolute top of the tree when it comes to strikers.

Chelsea have new ownership coming through and it will be interesting whether Thomas Tuchel wants to get rid of Lukaku, or try and get the best out of him because, at the end of the day, he cost nearly £100 million.
