The England manager’s job is every bit a poisoned chalice as people have made out, with the tabloids already making life difficult for Roy Hodgson.
Today’s headline reads: ‘Woy gets the England job. Bwing on the Euwos (We’ll see you in the Ukwaine against Fwance!’)
A bit of harmless fun or cruel mocking of a talented manager’s speech impediment, which ultimately has no bearing on Hodgson’s ability to do the job.
It’s hardly the first time in recent months The Sun has attracted the ire of the nation when it comes to England. Remember them dragging up a ‘racial abuse’ issue from 17 years ago regarding Stuart Pearce when he was made interim manager by the FA?
Pundit Gary Neville has made his views clear on Twitter: ‘Disgustung (sic) headlines, good journo’s under pressure writing pieces for their mates and a certain paper needs putting out of circulation.’
While not naming The Sun explicitly, there was no confusion as to who the Neviller means, referring to the paper sticking it to Hodgson because their ‘mate’ Harry Redknapp is a columnist at the paper.
Thousands of users have been slating the paper’s headline on Twitter too, as ‘shocking judgement’ and in ‘ill-taste’.
The Sun had intriguingly decided not to use the same headline on its website this morning, instead leading with the far more sensible- ‘EuRoy 2012’.
