Everton’s slump continued with a 2-0 loss to Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.
Gary Neville has blasted Everton’s senior defenders as the club’s dip in form continues to leave them in the bottom three of the Premier League.
The former Manchester United and England ace told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, that he was unimpressed with the displays of Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams.
Neville, 42, defended interim boss Unsworth despite a disappointing start to life in the job and instead urged the Everton trio to shoulder the responsibility for the Merseyside outfit’s recent, abysmal form.
“Those experienced players at the back disappoint me continuously, I think they should take responsibility,” Neville said. “They don’t, they shy away from responsibility.
“How many games have those lads played? Baines, Jagielka, Williams – they’ve played hundreds of games! Close your spaces, it’s ridiculous.
“He’s (Unsworth) come up, he’s done a good job bringing youth players through the youth team and we’re killing him because he’s lost a couple of games. It’s ridiculous.”
The Toffees suffered a 2-0 loss to Leicester City on Sunday afternoon – Unsworth’s second loss in two games as interim manager – condemning the Toffees to another week in the relegation zone.
It remains to be seen if Everton will find a replacement for Ronald Koeman before Thursday night’s Europa League clash against Lyon, in what is a must-win game if they are to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
The Toffees will then be looking to put their league form right as they face Watford at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon in England’s top division.
