Gary Neville offered his thoughts on Liverpool and James Milner following their win over Wolves.

Gary Neville labelled James Milner’s challenge on Matt Doherty in the first half as ‘clumsy’ but believes Wolves should not have been awarded a penalty as Liverpool picked up a valuable 2-0 win at Molineux on Friday night.

The former England international, who was playing at right-back, went in to tackle Doherty just as he was entering the penalty area.

Replays showed that as Milner went in for the tackle, he pulled out at the last second, with Doherty ending up going over the Liverpool player.

During the halftime break, former Manchester United man Neville offered his thoughts on the incident as he backed referee Craig Pawson’s decision not to avoid a spot kick.

“I don’t think it was [a penalty],” Neville told Sky Sports’ Premier League channel on 21/12/2018 at 8:55 pm.

“It is clumsy from Milner, in the sense that he dives in, but he stops well short and it comes across him. He tucks in like a right-back would and I think in the end Matt Doherty just ends up going over him.”

Mo Salah had given the away side the lead in the first half before the in-form forward set-up centre-back Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool’s second goal of the game.

Following that win, Jurgen Klopp’s side have now opened up a four-point lead on second-placed Manchester City, who host Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

Regardless of City’s result at the weekend, Liverpool will be top of the Premier League table for Christmas, but they do have a number of tricky festive fixtures coming up.

The Reds will host Newcastle at Anfield on Wednesday before they play Arsenal and title challengers Manchester City in the space of six days.
