Gary Neville was asked which defender he would sign for Manchester United on Thursday afternoon, and he responded by picking Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk or Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos.

United have struggled in defence this season, with fans continuously calling for new signings in defence. The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly have all been criticised.

Liverpool, meanwhile have conceded just four goals in the Premier League in 10 games, and sit in a lofty second place. Compare that to Neville’s beloved United, who sit way down in eighth place and have conceded 17 times.

Neville put aside his and United’s rivalry with Liverpool to choose van Dijk as the centre-back he would bring to Old Trafford if he could, as well as Real Madrid star Ramos.

Van Dijk, a £75million signing in January from Southampton, has clocked up 35 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions and helped Jurgen Klopp’s side keep 16 clean sheets – conceding just 31 goals.

United travel to Bournemouth ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off before going up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus on Wednesday night in the Champions League. They face van Dijk’s Liverpool on December 16.
