Liverpool defender Andy Robertson endured a nightmare two games with Scotland over the international break.
BBC Sport pundit Gary Naysmith has admitted that he ‘feels sorry’ for Liverpool defender Andy Robertson after he endured two nightmare games with Scotland.
Left-back Robertson saw his Scotland side suffer two costly defeats over the international period. At first, they were beaten by Russia before Belgium thrashed them 4-0 on Monday night.
It was another new low for Scotland on the international stage as their chances of reaching next summer’s European Championships are now very slim.
Speaking to Sportsround on BBC Radio Scotland (10/09/2019), former Scotland and Everton defender Naysmith questioned why Robertson can transform his club form onto the international stage.
“We need players to replicate their performances from their club for the national team,” Naysmith told Sportsround. “If they are not doing that, I don’t think it would be the weight of expectation [as the problem] because the majority of them play at big, big clubs.
“I feel sorry for Andy Robertson because everyone focuses on him. He’s playing at the biggest club. They want him to be the captain and whatever. I’ve no idea why it is but he doesn’t look the same player that’s playing for Scotland that played a week earlier for Liverpool. I have no idea why that can be.”
Scotland’s problems stem outside of Robertson and perhaps outside of the current crop of players that are being picked because nothing seems to be going right for them.
Robertson will be hoping to put a difficult ten or so days behind him when he returns to Melwood where he will be looking to get his confidence back.
Liverpool will host Steve Bruce’s Newcastle at the weekend as Jurgen Klopp’s side aim to build on their 100% start to the Premier League season.
